Moebius : Gravity Lens

Moebius

Jean Girard is dead.

There's a poster hanging immediately to my left of Epic Comic's Moebius collectors editions. I've looked at it every day since it has hung there. There's also an Arzach bust on my shelf and two prints from the Arzach Portfolio on another wall. Moebius has been an integral part of my fandom for all of my adult life.

I was becoming disillusioned with comics when I first discovered Heavy Metal magazine. The Airtight Garage of Jerry Cornelius turned me on to Michael Moorcock. The Incal introduced me to Jodorowsky. His two part Silver Surfer comic is still among my favorites, as is The Long Tomorrow. His design work in The Book of Alien is haunting. His rendition of Death from The Endless hung on my wall for years. Moebius did big, strange fantasy stories that oozed a uniquely European surrealism. When the trailer for the animated adaptation of The Incal was released last year it gave me chills. I cannot accurately measure his influence on me as an artist and as a fan. Simply put, he made me think differently about illustration.

Remembrances here, here, and here.
